The NBA Draft Lottery Could Be Changing For The Better

The NBA Draft Lottery may be getting a facelift.

The NBA Draft Lottery has needed to be changed for years now. Currently, the team that finishes last in the NBA has the best chances of getting the first overall pick of the NBA Draft, which encourages tanking.

As it stands now, the team that finishes last has a 25% chance of receiving the first-pick while the second and third place teams have a 19.9% and 15.6% chance, respectively. That’s a rather significant jump from one to two and especially from one to three.

This could all be changing, and for what should be, for the better as the bottom three teams in the league would all have an equal chance at snagging the first overall pick. We could see this chance come in 2019 as it could be voted into legislation.

This report comes via ESPN, which claims that the NBA competition committee is expected to vote next week on sending a formal recommendation to the board of governors for final passage.

What’s very interesting about this proposal is not only the fact that the bottom three teams would have an equal shot at the first pick, but the gap between the picks outside of the bottom three would significantly shrink which could cause a ripple affect across all team’s draft hopes.

There is no hiding from the fact that this move would be the NBA trying to push against the act of tanking, but how could you blame them from doing so? There are always going to be good teams and bad teams, but tightening that gap and adding even more drama to the bottom three team’s odds to get the top pick is a smart move.

The NBA isn’t struggling by any means and this action would only better the product. There shouldn’t be a system in place that rewards the laughing stock of the league.
