Rory McIlroy is coming off of a winless 2017 season which was plagued by a rib injury, but the world’s 11th ranked golfer told The Telegraph that his rib wasn’t the only health scare he’s been dealing with.

McIlroy described it as an ‘irregularity’ with his heart and more specifically a ‘flat T-Wave.’

Here is more from The Telegraph:

“The rib’s fine, no problems whatsoever — I had an MRI scan on my thoracic spine and all was OK,” McIlroy said, after returning from yet another sun-lit practice session. “But I’ve got a bit of an irregularity with my heart that I have to keep on top of.”

“I have a flat T-wave and I’ll have to get an echo [cardiogram] on my heart every six months and an MRI scan every year.

“I suffered a really bad viral infection in China 18 months ago and they told me that’s the reason that I have this thickening of my left ventricle and there’s a bit of scar tissue. For now, I just need to stay on top of it and have to stay fit. Hey, I was planning on doing that anyway.”

This is certainly no light matter, it wouldn’t be for anyone, but from what McIlroy says it sounds as if he’s been on top of this and the situation is manageable which is great news.

Golf is in an exceptionally great place at the moment. Yes, you have Tiger Woods set to make his full comeback, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson and company all towards the top of the World Golf Rankings, but without McIlroy out there doing battle with those guys the game takes a hit.

He’s one of the more electric athletes on the plane to watch when he’s on and we’re all hoping for nothing but great news from this moment onward.
