McGregor vs. Mayweather Obliterated All Expectations
Both fighters showed us a whole hell of a lot.
Heading into this fight there were many different expectations. You had the McGregor die-hards saying he was going to take down Floyd Mayweather. You had the Mayweather fans, and true boxing fans, saying that there was a better shot of the sun exploding today than McGregor winning the fight.
Then you had the majority of people, mostly casual fans and followers, say that it was going to be a snooze fest. Mayweather was going to be Mayweather and wrap up and run around the ring like we’ve seen him do way too often, but instead we got a very real show.
And sure, you can label the fight as ‘not great’ from a boxing standpoint, but then again it wasn’t at all the most dull or worst boxing match we’ve seen over the last 20 years either.
The fight exceeded all expectations no matter what way you look at it.
Don’t kid yourself either, an MMA fighter stepped into the ring with one of, if not the greatest boxer of all time and held his own. He legitimately looked like a boxer and took Money May into the 10th round; and he didn’t just do it dancing around to stay alive, he fought.
In the opening two rounds the fight was McGregor’s. He was landing jabs high and low with his long-reach and it was impressive. Did you get the sense that Mayweather was kind of toying with McGregor and setting him up? Yeah of course, that’s one of the reasons the man is now 50–0, but it also gave that glimmer of hope that McGregor could do some damage and either drop Mayweather or extend the fight longer than most expected; the latter happened.
McGregor landed some shots, Mayweather landed some shots and at the end of the night both fighters showed us a lot.
McGregor showed the world that yes, he’s just a bad-ass fighter and an absolute freak of an athlete. You give that man a little more time to train and who knows what he could do on the boxing landscape for real. Oh, and let’s not forget that the man is pure entertainment. He was standing in the ring with Mayweather mocking him with his hands behind his back.
Mayweather showed us his greatness. You can hate Mayweather the person, but inside that ring the man is a world-class genius. Mayweather has the boxing brains, the boxing composure, the boxing lungs and of course the boxing experience that earned him the win. He wore down McGregor on his way to his TKO victory. Once the sixth-round came around, the fight was all but over with the way things were going. Mayweather was calm and collected while McGregor looked like a man that couldn’t find oxygen.
Would it have been more fun to see one of the two fighters get dropped to the canvas? Of course, it always is more entertaining when that happens, we’re humans. But, nevertheless, we got a fight that was edge of your seat entertainment that saw a UFC champion hold his own against one of the GOATs.
