On Tuesday afternoon Roger Goodell and the NFL announced that the league’s celebration policy has been loosened. Players can now use the football as a prop in celebrations, celebrating on the ground is fair game and ‘group demonstrations’ won’t draw a flag either. In summary, celebrations in the NFL are going to be fun.

Now when people playing a game do something well, they can celebrate a little more loosely. It’s entertaining when guys are having fun out on the field and show out, at least for most people.

Marvin Lewis isn’t about that life tho, here’s what he had to say about the news, via ESPN:

“I’m not for that at all,” Lewis, who is on the NFL Competition Committee, said of the change. “We had a good standard, and the whole standard has always been, you want to teach people how to play the game the correct way and go about it the correct way, and that’s not a very good example for young people.”

Lewis said he didn’t like the idea of emphasizing individuals in a team sport.

“The rules were changed for a reason, and I thought we had a good outcome,” he said. “Again, this is a team game, and … I don’t understand why we want to give in to individual celebrations.”

Lewis coached Chad Johnson and Terrell Owens back in the day, the kings of touchdown celebrations. I guess it’s safe to say he didn’t like the stuff they did too much.

But hey, people are still going to get flagged for doing dome stuff in the endzone and the NFL is still in a pretty awful place publicly, but this is a step in the right direction for fun and entertainment. Congrats, NFL.
