Jordan Spieth Puts On A Show Unlike Any Other To Win British Open
If you didn’t get to watch what Jordan Spieth did at The Open on Sunday, we’re sorry.
Jordan Spieth entered the day with a three-shot lead over Matt Kuchar and heading into the final-round most knew the day was going to belong to one of the two.
It belonged to Spieth.
During the first nine holes it looked and felt as if Spieth was going to fall off the Earth. He was missing three footers and turned at 3-over while Kuchar was able to turn at even par setting up a showdown for the ages on the back nine with the two players tied.
The two remained knotted at 8-under as they got to the tee at №13 and this is where things changed, and changed big time. Spieth sent one dead-right off the tee and ultimately had to take an unplayable lie what seemed like 100 yards behind where his ball actually ended up.
Spieth ended up hitting a 3-wood short of the green and got up and down for bogey while Kuchar made par to take his first lead of the day.
The momentum seemed to be falling in Kuchar’s way, but Spieth then turned on a switch. He went unconscious, went into killer mode and put on a show that will be remembered forever.
It all began on 14 when he nearly made a hole-in-one before sinking his birdie putt to tie things up yet again. Then, on the Par 5 15th, he hit the green in two and sunk a 45-footer for eagle. He was clearly fired up and even told his caddie Michael Greller to go get his ball out of the cup after dropping the bomb.
Kuchar was able to birdie the hole to remain within striking distance, but Spieth followed the eagle up with yet another birdie on 16.
Spieth went from taking an unplayable on 13 and making bogey to playing his next three holes at four under par. Plus, it’s not like Kuchar played those holes badly either at 1-under, but Spieth took things to a level that is unmeasurable.
Kuchar was the first in to make birdie on 17, but Spieth buried his birdie putt right on top of him giving him a two-shot advantage walking to the 18th tee basically giving him the Claret Jug.
Golf produces incredible moments and stories relatively often. There are drama filled situations nearly ever week on the PGA Tour, but the absolute show Spieth gave viewers on Sunday afternoon at Royal Birkdale is an all-timer. It’s one of the greatest finishes in major championship history.
Spieth, who is still only 23-years-old, has now won three legs of the career Grand Slam. He joins Jack Nicklaus as the only other golfer younger than 24-years-old to do so.
