In A Gut-Wrenchingly Sad Presser Jason Day Reveals His Mom Is Battling Cancer, Withdraws From WGC Match Play
I hate this, I hate this, I hate this.
Jason Day got through six holes at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship on Wednesday and that is probably six more holes than any other person would get through after he revealed why he conceded his match.
I can not wrap my head around playing golf, or doing pretty much anything else for that matter, under those types of circumstances. I’m a guy that can barely take back my putter after realizing I forgot to lock my car before teeing off.
Day’s father passed away from stomach cancer when he was 12-years-old.
The Aussie told ESPN’s Jason Sobel this story about his mother:
Day said he went through a wild streak after his father died until he was sent off to a golf academy, where under the teaching and mentoring of Colin Swatton, he rose to be a PGA champion and reach №1 in the world.
His mother took out a second mortgage on the house and borrowed money from relatives to pay for his schooling. After winning the PGA Championship in 2015, Day recalled watching her cut the lawn with a knife because they couldn’t afford a lawn mower and using a kettle for hot water to bathe. He once shopped for used clothes at a store where for $5 he could stuff as much as he could into a bag.
Day of course did not mention anything about The Masters coming up in two weeks. Hoping for the best for Day, his mother and the rest of his family in this horrible time.
