College Basketball Seniors To Play In $100k 3-on-3 Tournament During 2018 Final Four
College hoops players will have a shot at winning $100,000 this March.
March Madness is already one of the top sporting events on the planet with dramatics and excitement always at an all-time high, but it appears things are going to be even better this March.
Intersport, a marketing company based out of Chicago, announced on Tuesday, according to CBS, the creation of the “3-on-3 College Hoops Invitational.” It’s set to be a three-day tournament that will take place in San Antonio, the host city for this upcoming season’s Final Four, and will feature college basketball players playing for a $100,000 prize
Now you may be asking how the hell is the NCAA letting players compete for cash, but only certain players are eligible to compete: seniors who have exhausted their eligibility and therefore are not expected to be subject to NCAA violations for receiving impermissible benefits. Plus, NCAA director of media coordination David Worlock told CBS Sports that this event isn’t tied to the NCAA at all.
What is interesting is that only one team per conference will be represented. Plus, with the tournament going on during the Final Four (March 30 — April 1) players competing in the Final Four can’t be chosen. It’s unclear whether or not every conference will be represented or not, per Intersport’s communications manager Steve Flaherty.
As for the rules, here you have them:
a half-court game, a four-man roster, a 12-second shot clock, 1-pointers inside the arc, and 2-pointers outside of it; and the first team to 21 — or the leading team after 10 minutes — wins.
So the team of four that wins will take home $25,000 each for those not keeping up here.
It’s also worth noting that the tournament will be bracketed, but it is unclear at this time whether or not the tourny will be single or double-elimination.
It’s pretty remarkable how popular 3-on-3 hoops has become. Sure, it’s been popular casually and at your local gyms, but now we have The Big 3, this style of basketball will also be an Olympic game in 2020 and now this.
