Blimp Crashes at U.S. Open, Pilots Reportedly Parachute Out Safely

Early during the first-round of the U.S. Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin, the AirOne blimp flying high over the course went down in flames. The video is unlike anything you’ve probably ever seen.

It looks just like you’d imagine however, a giant balloon falling to the ground. And yes, blimps are still operated by pilots just like any other major aircraft.

Here’s another look at it:

According to TMZ, the pilot of the one-man aircraft parachuted out but did suffer burns to the face and has pain in his neck and lower back. The blimp landed in a field near the course.

As for what caused the accident, that information has not become available at this time. It’s safe to say the FAA will be investigating.
